Interactivity (SM1205)
It is a general introduction to the ideas and production of interactive media for year 1 students. The lectures cover elements of human computer interaction, desktop interface design, simple electronics, network media, interactive cinema, mixed realities, etc. Students will use the open source software PureData to create audio visual performance and interactive toys.

Image processing and augmented reality applications (SM3123)
It is an intermediate course to experiment on the pixel based graphics programming and elementary usage of computer vision. The course will introduce simple algorithms for motion tracking. Students are encouraged to try out simple augemented reality applications with the open source language – Processing.

Fundamentals of programming (SM1204)
Students in this class will be introduced the fundamental concepts and practices of computer programming with the use of an open source language Processing, designed for media artists and designers. They learn the basic constructs of a program and the problem solving and creative skills for media content creation.

This is an introductory course on the computer network in general and the Internet in a special case. Students are required to understand the basic nature of a computer network, client server model of communication and various typical Internet applications. They can acquire to develop Internet web based applications and online multiple-user environment with the help of the Flash Media Server.

It is an introductory course to cover different approaches to the study of interactivity. A wide range of disciplines will be included to question the common concepts and practices of interactive media, which span from cognitive science, avant garde cinema, human computer interaction, game studies, etc.

The course does not intend to be a practical and technical one. Students, however, are expected to exercise critical inquiry into various applications of interactive media and technology in everyday life. They will read extensively in different areas about interactivity, drawing reference from ‘traditional’ media. Critique of existing interactive products and artworks will be the regular teaching and learning activities.
